Auditions: Pend Oreille Players has many opportunities for all ages in up-coming productions.
* "Beauty and the Beast, Jr,": POPA will hold a read-through and sing through for middle-school and high school age youth on Thursday, August 5, with auditions slated for Thursday, August 12. The August meetings for the Northeast Washington Genealogical Society (NeWGS) will take place on Wednesday, August 11th. The Computer Interest Group will meet in the basement of the Colville Public Library at 10:30 a.m. Gordy Struve, NeWGS member, will be presenting Part 2 of a presentation given at the February meeting regarding management of downloaded images from various media. This class is co-sponsored by the Libraries of Stevens County. The afternoon meeting takes place in the meeting room at the Family History Center located in the LDS church on Juniper at 1:30 p.m. An introduction will be given to Roots Television; an Internet channel servicing millions of people interested in genealogy and family history. Today we will be viewing three short case stories regarding DNA testing and its connection to genealogy research. Come join us for an informational gathering at this afternoon session. Segments from the exciting new WWII novel by local resident Jo Ann Bender will be dramatized Thursday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. in the Garden Room of the Colville Library (side entrance). Lebensborn is the story of a French girl caught in the trap of the SS to create their Master Race. It was the most secret and mysterious of all Nazi programs. The book was ten years in the writing.

* September 24-26: Lost in the Wild West is the theme of this year's Teen Rally. Teen Rally is open to enrolled 4-H teens in grades 7-12. It's a great opportunity to network with other teens, learn leadership skills, complete a service project and have fun! This year's rally will be held at Camp Tokiwanee in Tonasket on September 24-26. Registrations are due by September 17.

Life of the Spirit

The Colville Chapter of The Compassionate Friends will have a family picnic on Sunday, August 15 at the Matney Beach on the Kettle River at 1:00 p.m. Our annual Memorial Picnic/Balloon Release will replace the general meeting on the third Tuesday, August 17th. We will try to adhere to a schedule this year to better accommodate everyone's busy schedule. Welcome: 1:00-1:15 p.m.; Meal: 1:15-2:00 p.m.; Balloon Release & Flower Memorial on Beach-2:15 p.m.; Closing-3:00 p.m. The Compassionate Friends is a nationwide support group for bereaved parents, grandparents, and siblings. It is a self-help organization offering friendship, understanding, and hope to bereaved families. It aids them in positive resolution of the grief experience and fosters their physical and emotional health. Membership is open to any parents, grandparents, and siblings who have experienced a child's death, regardless of the circumstances or the child's age. Those who come should bring a dish or two of food to share, lawn chairs, and a flower to commemorate your child. Practice your Spanish! Do you speak Spanish? Are you interested in learning the language? Join up with the Northeast Washington Spanish club that meets once a week in the Colville/Kettle Falls area (the location is on a rotational schedule.) This is an eclectic group of native speakers, intermediate level speakers and those just getting started in the language. There are a number of ways to contribute, from donations of nonperishable food items and cash, to organizing food drives in your church or organization or at work, to volunteering your time at the food bank, to including the food bank in your will. Each and every donation to your local food bank makes a difference for area residents.

Cancer Education and Support Group - A unique group intended for cancer patients, families, friends, and support staff is available in the Providence Health Education Center (1169 E. Columbia Ave, Colville) across the street from the front entrance to Providence Mount Carmel Hospital. This group will connect with experts at Providence Cancer Center in Spokane via telehealth video conferencing. MS support monthly meetings are on the second Wed. of each month in the lower level of the Health Education House, 1169 E Columbia, Colville @ 1:00 pm. Living with Multiple Sclerosis is an ever-changing endeavor, with the disease's unknowns and unpredictabilties. Do not live with MS in isolation! HIV/AIDS Class for Non-licensed Personnel will be offered at Mount Carmel Hospital Health Education Center, 1169 E. Columbia, in partnership with NE Tri-County Health Dept. Free of charge, participants will receive a certificate upon completion that satisfies requirements for day care operators, foster home caregivers, and many other occupations requiring this certification. CONNECTIONS, a department of Ferry County, offers services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, the homeless and victims of crime throughout Ferry County. An emergency shelter facility and homelessness prevention services are also available. Services are free and confidential. Connections is located at 870 S. Clark Avenue in Republic. Office hours are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Outreach Offices located in Inchelium and Keller, please call to schedule an appointment, as hours vary. Give a preschooler a Head Start: Head Start and ECEAP preschool are available at no cost for children ages 3 to 5 in six school districts: Colville, Kettle Falls, Chewelah, Springdale, Newport and Cusick. Children in their last year before Kindergarten are enrolled first, as well as children with disabilities and children from low-income families. Transportation assistance is available for many classes. Call 684-8421 or 1-877-219-5542 and ask for a Head Start staff. Head Start and ECEAP are programs of Rural Resources.

Today's Girl Scouts is more than just cookies and camp! The Girl Scout program also includes adventurous, fun activities like rock climbing, canoeing, backpacking and exploring careers in math, science and technology that appeal to today's girls. Girl Scouts offers activities for girls ranging from ages 4-17 and adults from ages 18-100. For information, call Debbie at 1-800-827-9478 ext. 246.
